Watch out, NYC! EV taxis are coming your way soon. It's often said that The Big Apple is one of the toughest auto endurance testing grounds in the world, and now the Nissan Leaf will be given the opportunity to strut its stuff in this harsh environment. Six Leaf vehicles will be tested by Nissan and the New York City Taxi and Limousine Committee as EV taxis. This move comes as part of NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg's green initiatives to reduce waste and make the city a more environmentally friendly place.
Although the city currently offers some hybrid taxis, these six Leaf vehicles will be the first all-electric taxi additions. Taxi drivers can sign up for the Nissan program, which includes receiving a "free" lease of a Nissan Leaf vehicle for up to a year and reporting back to their taxi companies and the Japanese automaker with comments and critiques. Mayor Bloomberg plans to have an all-electric cab system in The Big Apple by 2012, and these six vehicles will be a test-run for the future implementation.
Some experts worry that the Leafs will not be able to work well within the stop-and-go environment of NYC traffic, and that the time the Leaf drivers must take to charge the vehicles will be intrusive. Some have suggested more efficient driving methods by the cabbies and the use of DC quick-charging implements to aid in these issues. Time will tell if the Nisan vehicles can stand up to the pressure of a harsh driving environment, but we here at Coon Rapids Nissan have faith in the brand that challenges us to "shift the way [we] move"1 to prosper in any environment.
Although Coon Rapids Nissan doesn't currently have the Leaf in stock, we do have the fuel-efficient Nissan Versa and Nissan Sentra vehicles. Stop by 3300 129th Avenue NW Coon Rapids, MN 55448 for a great deal, and experience all that Nissan has to offer.
